How I made the Advertising Pack - Multi-use Poster

I have started editing my first poster through a variation of ideas and inspirations. I wanted to use an image of Julian Assange as he is the founder of Wikileaks (which is what the documentary is about!) and so thought it was most relevant. I then saw a picture of a group of people who were protesting to 'Free Julian' outside the British Embassy in Spain:As you can see they are wearing Guy Fawkes masks, which originated from their use in the film 'V for Vendetta'. The masks are now used for anonomity and are a symbol of rebellion against the government and the freedom of individuals.

And so I had the idea of layering the Guy Fawkes mask onto a photo of Julian Assange. I used Adobe Fireworks as it was the most advanced phot editing software I could freely use at school and at home.

By using the 'Magic Wand' tool I selected the half of the mask I wanted and then copyed it onto a seperate picture of Julian Assange:

I then placed the mask over his face I could then judge which aspects were in ratio and which weren't. The top half of the mask fit onto the face and so I had individually cut and paste each feature from the mask onto the face and then blend them in together. I then made sure that the mask covered his whole face by using the blue tool which smoothened out the edge as well.

By playing around with the different blending options and styles I could make the mask blend to the face whilst still being slightly transparent.

To place the flags on his shoulder I changed the colour and exposure of the pictures, layered them over his shoulders and then cut around any out-sticking edges.

I chose the digital style font as it can be associated with the hacking that Julian Assange is infamous for. I wanted the font to be a dark colour (preferably black) however as the back ground is black/grey and Julian is white/grey you wouldn't be able to see parts of the text.

[UPDATE] - After showing my poster to my Media class and asking for feedback I have changed the fonts around, instead of using the red digital font I have changed it to grey and moved it around. I have also distorted the font so that it fits more into the dark theme of the poster:

Editing Continued

The editing process has been going well with a lot of development to the structure of the documentary and we are now starting to see the beginning of our final documentary. We have included all of the footage that we wish to use, adjusting lengths, added transistions and have decided on using a 'vinegrette' effect for clips throughout our documentary, which can be seen in the screenshot below: We have used this effect as it gives the shots a dark feel which is how we want the documentary to look and feel.

There have been many parts which have taken a lot more time than initially thought, the Ken Clarke interview is around 20 minutes long and we needed to find around 1 minutes worth of talking which covers 3-4 questions. To pick out the different clips of the interview we listened to it over and over again and used sections were he mentions key points or points which are relevent to the question. We then put them in order with the questions asked by Zoe and included different filling shots such as the Google, Twitter and Blogger transistion.

There have also been many problems, we have had to film the presenting parts again as the audio and shot quality filmed in London weren't up to the standard that we were looking for.

Who is Mr Clarke and what does he do?

Ken Clarke (born on the 2nd July 1940) is a British Conservative politician, currently Member of Parliament for Rushcliffe, Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice.
He was first elected into Parliament in 1970 and is one of Britains best known politicians. He has served in the cabinets of both Margaret Thatcher and John Major. During his 40 years in politics Ken Clarke has undertaken many roles, these include:

Panorama Wikileaks

Yesterday BBC broadcasted a Panorama Wikileaks documentary which I watched to not only gain a deeper insight to Wikileaks, but to see some of the techniques that they have used.

Start of Editing

We have a vast amount of footage now which has to be split up and edited into a 5ish minute documentary. As there is so much footage I have looked back at the storyboards for guidance as to which footage we will want to use and in what order. As there are many things to do I have roughly planned out major points:

• Cut out appropriate footage


• Put clips into order


• Adjust footage length


• Add appropriate effects and transistions


• Add music, voice overs and ensure that all levels are correct

Today we have added all appropriate clips and ordered them to create a 'skeleton' of our documentary, from here we can add more clips, re-arrange shots and work on adjusting lengths. We have already realised that there are many areas which are 'missing pieces' and do not fit together and so we will need to either add more footage or re-arrange. There are also parts (such as the presenting with Zoe) were audio quality isn't to our satisfaction and so we will need to think about filming again.

To the left is a screenshot of iMovie, as you can see our footage is in a rough order and the cutting of footage has begun.

We have had to discuss other programs for editing as although iMovie is an easy, quick and accessable piece of software, we need a program which can achieve a higher level of technical editing and use more specific editing and effects . We have decided to use Sony Vegas Pro and Final Cut Pro, to edit sections which we need finer cuts and advanced effects for such as the introduction.

Meeting Kenneth Clarke

We have just got back from Nottingham after our interview with Mr Clarke; The build up towards the interview made us all nervous - especially Zoe as she was the one interviewing. However when we met Mr Clarke it was clear that we could relax as he was very kind, welcoming and cheery. After a seeminly long wait in the tense conservative waiting room we got called in to set up the cameras. After meets and greets with Mr Clarke we briefed him on the content of the interview and what we would be asking, we began the interview. He gave us lengthy, detailed answers and we were surprised how much information and personal views he gave us, which we didn't expect as politicians rarely go into personal views on subjects as touchy as this. The interview came to a close with some questions that we put in there about his love of jazz and other interests, which we hoped gave him an insight to the research we had done into his career and personal life. We got some good shots and close ups and had photos with him after. All in all the interview went very well, we got lots of interesting information and we're going to have plenty of footage to edit as the interview lasted longer than 20 minutes.

Preperation

So tomorow is the day that we travel up to Nottingham to interview Kenneth Clarke, we will be bringing with us:

• 3 Cameras (1 for Mr Clarke, 1 for Zoe and another for free hand close up shots)
• 2 Tri-pods (for the 2 cameras which will be filming Mr Clarke and Zoe)
• Our set of questions

London Filming

After spending the day at Southbank we have come back with the shots needed and we also got 4 interviews with the public which went really well.

Whilst filming the introduction for the documentary we were on Southbank looking at Parliment when Alistar Darling, Labours Shadow Chancellor of the Exchequer. So as you do we waited for him to walk nearer and took our chances at asking him for an interview. To which he said.....no.

After this we realised that we hadn't even filmed him!

Reply from Mr Clarke

Recently we recieved a letter from Mr Clarke's PA Mrs Debbie Sugg explaining how he has little time however could offer us a 15 minute slot at 11:50 during his surgery in Nottingham on Saturday 22nd January. A surgery is a time for local residents to put forward ideas, complaints or any other thoughs to their local mp.

His PA also asked for a set of questions which we will be asking Mr Clarke and so within the next few days we, as a group need to think of around 10 questions which we will eventually end up asking Mr Clarke.

Plan of London Filming

We are planning to film interviews with the public and filling shots around SouthBank area in London. We want to do this on Friday 14th January as the weather seems fine and we can all make it.
When in London we need to:

• Shots of Parliment from SouthBank
• Interview the public on Wikileaks - Zoe will do the interviewing, George and I shall each use a camera to get different shots
• Film an introduction to the documentary - this will be Zoe presenting on Southbank with Parliment in the background
• Film close up shots of parliment

For this trip we will need:

• Questions for the public
• Introduction script
• 2 Tripods
• 2 Cameras
